Reports: New York Attorney General Has Opened an Investigation Into the NRA’s Dealings as a Tax-exempt Organization
News of Investigation Comes as Leadership Dispute Unfolds at NRA Convention
According to a New York Times report, the New York Attorney General has opened an investigation into the NRA, a tax-exempt organization chartered in New York. News of the investigation comes as the NRA deals with a leadership struggle during its annual convention.
Earlier this month, the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund filed a complaint about the NRA’s tax-exempt status with the IRS following publication of an article by The New Yorker, in conjunction with The Trace, detailing how “a small group of NRA executives, contractors, and vendors has extracted hundreds of millions of dollars from the nonprofit’s budget.”
“In light of the recent, credible allegations of excessive invoicing and personal enrichment by insiders, it’s encouraging that the New York Attorney General is looking into the NRA, and we renew our call for other state and federal authorities to do the same,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.”
