The National Rifle Association settled with New York’s Department of Financial Services (DFS) after being charged for acting as an unlicensed insurance provider and deceiving its members with misleading marketing practices. The NRA was forced to pay a $2.5 million civil fine in light of findings of multiple violations of NY law including selling an insurance product that regulators found was “dangerous and impermissible.” The settlement resolves charges that were initially filed in February 2020.

In 2017, DFS began investigating the NRA after Everytown for Gun Safety conducted and shared an investigation into the NRA’s Carry Guard program, which promised to provide insurance coverage for legal and other costs for gun owners who shoot someone and claim self-defense.
